Syntactical Characteristics of Modern English

3 credits. Requisite: Ingl 3102; 3104; 3012 or 3/4/5 on Advanced Placement Exam in English. 1st semester, alternate years. This is a course in the syntax of structural grammar, emphasizing sentence patterns and the modes of classification of single words and word groups.

Introduction to Language (formally 4205)

3 credits. Requisite: 3104; 3/4/5 on Advanced Placement Exam. 1st semester, alternate years. This course introduces students to the field of linguistics: morphology, syntax, phonology, issues of meaning, language use, language acquisitions, language variations and changes, language and cognition and the basics of psycholinguistics.

U.S. Literature I

3 credits. Requisite: 3104, 3012, or 4/5 on the Advanced Placement Exam in English. 1st semester, alternate years. This course covers writers of the colonial period through the mid-19th century and may include Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Dickenson, Melville, Poe, among others. U.S. Literature II

3 credits. Requisite: 3104, 3012, or 4/5 on the Advanced Placement Exam in English (Student may take this course without taking 3251). 2nd semester, alternate years. Equivalent for3201, 3202, 3221 or 3222. Surveying American literature from the mid-19th century to the present, this course may include Twain, Crane, Hurston and Rodriguez.
 

INGL 3265

The English Language Across Cultures

3 credits. Requisite: 3104 or 4/5 in the Advanced Placement Exam in English. Equivalent for 3201, 3202, 3221 or 3222. 1st semester, alternate years. Cultural behaviors as mediated through language. Examines cultural differences between the students’ own culture and other cultures in the United States and other countries. An equivalent for 3201 or 3202.

Principles of Speech Communication

3 credits. Requisite: 3102; 3104 2nd Semester, alternate years. Course helps students increase their knowledge and understanding of speech communication. Activities and strategies that will enhance their ability to communicate effectively at the professional and social level.

Young Adult Literature

3 credits. Requisite: 3104, 3012 or 4/5 on the Advanced Placement Exam in English. Equivalent for 3201, 3202, 3221 or 3222. 2nd semester, alternate years. History, types, literary aspects, evaluation of Young Adult Literature, and its relation to mass media and censorship. Readings selected from a multi-cultural bibliography including works by Hispanic and Caribbean authors.

Video, Culture and Literature

3 credits. Requisite: 3104; 3012; 4/5 in the Advance Placement Exam in English. An equivalent for 3201, 3202, 3221 or 3222. Every semester, every year. Examines how meaning is produced in academic disciplines of study as distinguished from mass media forms of cultural production.
