ENGLISH SEMINAR COURSES

These advanced "umbrella courses" will allow the professor freedom to play with the various possible topics within the title's rubric. The following are the eight area seminars proposed at this moment:

INGL 4185

SEMINAR IN CULTURAL STUDIES

The study of “high” and “low” culture in the context of society, history and personal identity. Written and visual, cultural as well as theoretical texts will be used to examine how the project of cultural studies operates in an interdisciplinary framework.

INGL 4195

SEMINAR IN FEMINISM, GENDER AND LITERATURE

The role of literature in creating, perpetuating, challenging and subverting sex-based social roles and/or gender identity.

INGL 4365

SEMINAR IN LITERARY HISTORY

The development of literary practices within their historical framework. The literature of an era or movement, theories of literary history as a method of organizing the study of literature, and/or works of selected writers in terms of their roles in the department communication

INGL 4290

SEMINAR IN LINGUISTICS

Each seminar will present a particular area of linguistic study and its relation to such topics as cognitive process, culture, gender, social stratification, and non-verbal communication.

INGL 4295

SEMINAR IN RHETORIC AND ADVANCED COMPOSITION

Allows students to study and apply rhetorical theory (rhetoric being the art of persuasive communication) within specific contexts in order to improve their writing

INGL 4370

SEMINAR IN MODES AND GENRES

Introduction and examination of the role of genres, such as the novel and/or modes, such as narrative, in the study of literature.

INGL 4375

SEMINAR IN RACE, ETHNICITY AND LITERATURE

The study of literature from the perspective of race and/or ethnicity. Students may study the literature by and about a racial or ethnic group, (including works by individual authors) ethnicity as an approach to literature, and/or the literature of race and ethnicity in dialectic with other political/cultural formations.

SEMINAR IN CRITICAL THEORY

Critical theory as a particular kind of writing and a way of thinking about literature, culture, language, society and identify, among others topics of inquiry.
